The modelling world is hard to break into, but if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’re life will forever be changed. Some of the highest paid and most successful models are African American and are fronting the covers of magazines around the world.


Beverly Johnson
Beverly Johnson is a model, actress, and businesswoman. She made history when she rose to fame as the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in August 1974. Not only is she a model, she has the huge title as one of The New York Times 20th century’s most influential people in fashion. Johnson was also honored in 2006 at Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball along with other African American ladies such as Rosa Parks and Tina Turner.

Tyra Banks
One of the ladies that started it all, Tyra Banks kills every photo shoot and the runway with her fierce walk and high attitude. Her emence success in the modelling world has made her career go from modelling to TV show host. Not only is she beautiful, but she’s smart. Banks is one of four African Americans women to have repeatedly ranked among the world’s most influential people by Timemagazine. Banks was one of the original Angels for Victorias Secret, has created the massively popular TV show America’s Next Top Model, and also had her own talk show called The Tyra Banks Show.

Naomi Campbell

Known for her beauty and also her temper, Campbell was the go to model in the 80’s and 90’s. She was the first African American model to show up on the cover of French Vogue. The british model was discovered at 15 and walked countless runway shows and has countless covers under her belt. She has now moved onto TV by being a judge on The Face.






Iman Abdulmajid
Know by only her first name, Iman is a Somalian supermodel that got her big break when a photographer came across her while she was walking in Nairobi. Married to David Bowie, her first modelling assignment was for the biggest magazine Vogue. After almost two decades of modeling, Iman started her own cosmetics firm in 1994, focusing on difficult-to-find shades for ethnic women. As of 2010, Iman Cosmetics is a $25-million-a-year business.
