We Breakdown Rihanna’s 18 Tattoos

When you think of Rihanna, chances are tattoos come to mind. Is there such thing as too many tattoo’s? The singer clearly doesn’t think so. The long list of the singers tattoos will continue to grow, but as of now the number stands at 18. Rihanna has said. “I am so intrigued by tattoos. It’s an entire culture, and I study it. Sometimes I go with friends, or just by myself. I get bum-rushed, but I don’t care. I don’t take security.”

1. Music note on her foot
This is recorded as one of Rihanna’s first tattoos, which she got around 2006. The singer has once said that music was built into her DNA in which case this tattoo had meant a lot to her at the time. Note: This tattoo has been replaced with a falcon. Check tattoo number 17.

3. Sanskrit prayer down her hip
As one of RiRi’s most recognizable tattoos, the Sanskrit prayer finds its home on her right hip. The prayer translates to “Forgiveness, Honesty, Suppression and Control.”

4. Shhh…
This is one of the singers most famous tattoos, although not her most original. Lindsay Lohan and Lily Alan also share the same tattoo as the star.

5. LOVE on her finger
The tattoo is of “Love” written in a simple cursive font on her right middle finger. The tattoo is placed so it doesn’t get shown unless she sticks up her middle finger or holds a microphone.

6. A trail of stars on her neck
This was actually broken down into two separate tattoos.  The first part of the tattoo were done in LA and were a small cluster of stars at the top back of the singers neck. Later, Bang Bang from New York City finished them and brought the pieces down the singers back.

7. Skull with a pink bow
This tattoo is located on the back of RiRi’s left ankle, which she added during her stay in Miami in 2008. At the time, this was Rihanna’s first tattoo that included colour.

8. Arabic phrase on her ribcage

As RiRi loves saying tattoos, this one in particular says “Al Hurria fi Al Maseeh”, which translates to “Freedom in God”.

9. Pieces sign behind her ear

Done in style, Rihanna’s next tattoo was a Pieces sign (her birthday is Feb.20/88) done by a famous Brazilian artist. Both happened to be in Tokyo at the same time and made the magic of this tattoo happen. Lucky for RiRi as the artist typically books 3 years in advance…

10. 4.11.1986

If you have seen pictures of Rihanna on the streets of NY or LA, chances are you have seen her bff Melissa by her side. Rihanna decided to tattoo the birthday of Melissa on her left shoulder.

11. Tribal on her hand

The most controversial tattoo that Rihanna has is definitely her tribal hand tattoo. The singer got the tat while in New Zealand during her tour. She reveals, “It’s their traditional way of tattooing,” of the Maori-inspired geometric design. “I always wanted one, it represents strength and love.”

12. A small gun on her side
The singer flew her tattoo artist from NY to LA to surprise her friend with a tattoo for her birthday. Rihanna cannot let someone get a tattoo without her, so decided to get one as well. Which resulted in a small gun on her right rib cage.

13. “Never a failure, always a lesson”

Rihanna walked into a tattoo salon at 2 am to get this tattoo on her right shoulder. What is said to be her own motto, the star had the ink done backwards so she was able to read it to herself in the mirror.

14. “Rebelle Fleur”
This tattoo got a lot of slack from the press as they accused Rihanna of getting the French phrasing wrong. After a suppressive text message sent from Rihanna to her tattoo artist “Bang Bang”, the air was cleared. “Rebelle Fleur translates to rebel flower, NOT rebelious flower, its 2 nouns so in that case fleur does not HAVE to be first! Fyi, cuz they will ask”. – Rihanna

15. Small cross
This was a great placement decision by Rihanna as she has said it was the easiest to cover with a necklace but can easily be see if she wanted. It is also one of RiRi’s smallest tattoos.

16. ‘Lover’
Rihanna added another wording tattoo, Love, in yet another language just above her butt. This tattoo is written in Tibetan and was done in March 2012.

17. Falcon above her ankle
Rihanna replaced one of her first tattoos, her music notes, with an Egyptian falcon, shaped in a gun. The singer tweeted: Falcon: a light that shines in the darkness! Never close their eyes during sleep.

18. Nefertiti

On her side almost reaching her back, the singer got ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti inked on her side. Nefertiti’s name literally translates to “the beautiful one has come.”

18. Egypitian goddess Isis
Rihanna paid tribute to her late grandmother with a tattoo of Egypitian goddess Isis. She tweeted out the picture with the caption: “Goddess Isis – Complete Woman – Model for future generations – #GRANGRANDOLLY – always in and on my heart.”
